Pentagon faces backlash over ban on Anthropic AI tools amid concerns of operational impact and contractor compliance

Pentagon staff and military contractors are pushing back against orders to remove Anthropic AI tools, arguing the platform remains the most effective option available. The directive has created tension across defence operations, with some users reluctant to comply.

Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has labelled the company a supply chain risk, enforcing a ban across the Pentagon and its contractors. However, the move is facing resistance, with reports that some personnel may revert to using the tools despite restrictions.

IT professionals within the Department of War say the decision undermines progress, noting Anthropic’s AI had already been successfully integrated into workflows. They argue alternative systems lack consistency, raising concerns about operational impact.
