Russian state-run news agency, TASS is reporting more than 1,000 Ukrainian servicemen will be sent to Russia.

It’s understood the fighters recently surrendered in the Ukrainian port city of Mariupol.

“Over 1,000 people from Azovstal were transported to Russia. Law enforcement agencies are working closely with them.”

TASS reports the plans are to transport a number of other Ukrainian prisoners of war to Russian territory.

An investigative arm of the Kremlin confirmed the militants will be interrogated. But Ukrainian authorities are yet to publicly respond to the reports.

It follows the Russian Defence Ministry previously claiming the soldiers surrendered after weeks of fighting in a besieged steel plant in the city of Mariupol.

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky says his nation’s military continues to step up.

“It is absolutely felt that the occupiers didn’t believe the resistance of our military would be so strong,” he says.

Russia claims it has opened a land corridor to the occupied area of Crimea, which is allowing civilians and goods to pass through the eastern part of the country.

Meanwhile, in the eastern Donbas region, Ukrainian troops are locked in fierce street battles with Russian forces.

“Next week we plan to launch a special book of executioners, an information system that confirms data on war crimes and war criminals from the Russian army,” he says.
