A gaunt Alexi Navalny has appeared in a Russian court – in what is his first public appearance since being sent to prison.

Navalny was seeking an appeal against a fine for defaming a Soviet World War Two veteran.

During proceedings, the Russian opposition leader said Vladimir Putin is “the King with no clothes”, attempting to rule “forever” and he only cares about “clinging to power”.

Navalny is serving a two and a half year sentence for his criticism of Russia’s president and the Kremlin.

The judge rejected this most recent appeal.
