A car travelling at speed has blew past police and drove into a crowd at a holiday parade in Wisconsin, injuring multiple people

Police have revealed that five people have died and over 40 are injured after an SUV ploughed into a crowd at a Christmas parade in Wisconsin.

Reports suggest dozens of people were injured after a suspect drove a red car through police barricades and into the Holiday Parade before opening fire.

The incident took place in Waukesha, a town located about 20 miles west of downtown Milwaukee. 

Further videos posted to social media show dozens of emergency vehicles responding to the scene in downtown Waukesha on Sunday night.

One Twitter user, Zach Heisler wrote on Twitter “at the Holiday parade and a car just broke through the police line, plowing through pedestrians and firing rounds out the window. Family and I are safe. Happened 20 feet in front of us.”

Witnesses  reported they saw dozens of people on the ground injured and that shots were fired by the driver.

A heavy police presence remains on scene with authorities asking the public to avoid the area.
