Meta removes network of accounts linked to Brazil’s military

Published

Social media giant Meta has removed a cluster of social media accounts associated with the Brazilian military

The Facebook owner says these profiles were posing as fake nonprofits, downplaying the negative effects of deforestation.

This is a massive blow to Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro‘s reputation.

The President has long been critical of environmentalism.

He has previously sent armed forces to the Amazon in an attempt to limit deforestation there but has had little success.

Meta investigated the people behind these fake profiles and found that they are active military personnel.

It is not yet clear whether these individuals were following orders or if they were acting independently.

Bolsonaro has previously spoken out against big tech firms accusing them of silencing conservative voices.

This marks the first time that Meta has taken down a network focussed on environmental issues.

Does American media have TikTok bias?

Published

on

While the fate of TikTok remains uncertain in the U.S.—there is no shortage of possibilities.

Several investors are hoping to benefit from a new federal law that requires TikTok’s China-based parent company to sell the popular platform or face a ban.

This comes after ByteDance and TikTok filed a lawsuit against the U.S. government to block the law from going into effect.

Meanwhile, eight TikTok creators filed their own challenge, arguing the law violates their First Amendment rights to free speech.

But as the saga continues many media outlets are defending the platform.

David Zhang from China Insider joins Veronica Dudo to discuss. #IN AMERICA TODAY #trending #TikTok #TikTokban #socialmedia #China
