In Short:
– Lockyer Valley is a vital agricultural area, supplying 30% of Queensland’s fresh vegetables.
– The Somerset Water Security Scheme enhances water capacity and supports long-term farming stability and production confidence.
Tanya Milligan, Mayor of the Lockyer Valley Regional Council, spoke about the area’s agricultural significance and a vital water security initiative.Lockyer Valley is among the world’s ten most fertile valleys, known for its extensive agriculture that occupies 71% of its land.

It plays a crucial role in food security, supplying 30% of Queensland’s fresh vegetables and 5% of Australia’s total supply.

The Somerset Water Security Scheme is under development, featuring a 153-kilometre pipeline with a capacity of 22,000 megalitres.

This initiative aims to ensure long-term stability for farmers, protecting them from severe production losses experienced during the millennium drought from 2005 to 2009.

Utilising the Western Corridor Recycled Water Scheme, the project aims to benefit agriculture and the wider community.

The Queensland state government is backing the scheme with $5 million in funding.

While planning for water security has been underway since 2017–2018, the upcoming Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games are expected to amplify regional visibility and legacy opportunities.

The mayor noted that the Games will not only spotlight sporting venues but also promote Australian agriculture and Lockyer Valley to visitors.

Enhanced irrigation capacity from the project will boost food production and allow local farmers to plan confidently for the future.
