Liz Cheney loses Wyoming to Donald Trump-backed candidate

U.S. Republican representative Liz Cheney has lost her Wyoming seat following a mammoth campaign by a Trump-backed candidate

Cheney has played a major role in the January 6 investigation, being one of only two Republicans serving on the congressional panel.

Just two years ago, Cheney won the primary with 73% of the vote… but she says she couldn’t follow that same path again.

She was up against Trump-backed candidate Harriet Hageman, and Hageman is well ahead, according to opinion polls.

Harriet Hageman won the primary vote, as her supporters celebrate at a sprawling outdoor rodeo.

Experts say the results show how far right the GOP has swung, and demonstrate how much of a grip Trump has on the party’s grassroots members.

Cheney will be forced out of Congress in January, but she’s not expected to go quietly, In fact, a 20-24 presidential bid may be on the cards.

More broadly, the Republican party is expected to retake the House and there’s a big chance they’ll take the Senate, too.

This would be devastating for current President Joe Biden, as it would effectively bring his legislative agenda to a halt.

Liz Cheney, daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney is using her campaign to keep attention on Trump’s actions, in an attempt to persuade Republicans he is a threat to democracy.
