World leaders urge restraint as conflict escalates

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz have called on the United States and Iran to return to negotiations, saying they favour a diplomatic solution. In a joint statement, they condemned Iranian attacks on countries in the region and urged Tehran to refrain from indiscriminate military strikes, adding that the Iranian people must be allowed to determine their own future.

The 22 nation Arab League described the Iranian attacks as a violation of the sovereignty of countries seeking peace and stability. Morocco, Jordan, Syria and the United Arab Emirates also denounced Iranian strikes targeting U.S. military bases in Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar and the Emirates. Syria’s condemnation is notable given its past alignment with Tehran, reflecting the new government’s efforts to rebuild regional and U.S. ties.

Saudi Arabia strongly condemned what it called Iranian aggression and a breach of sovereignty. Oman, which has been mediating between Washington and Tehran, criticised the U.S. action as a violation of international law and said disputes should be resolved through peaceful means rather than military escalation.

In Tel Aviv, multiple explosions were heard as Israel’s air defence systems attempted to intercept what officials say was the latest Iranian offensive. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

Trump warns US will strike Iran with unprecedented force if it retaliates

Donald Trump says the United States will respond “with a force that has never been seen before” if Iran carries out further retaliation in the region.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote that Iran had indicated it planned to strike hard, adding that it would be hit harder than ever if it followed through. He warned Tehran against escalating, saying the response would be unlike anything seen before.

The comments come amid rapidly rising tensions following U.S. and Israeli strikes and Iran’s vows of further military action.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps says the “most-intense offensive operation” in its history is about to begin against Israel and U.S. military bases in the Middle East, according to a statement reported by the Associated Press. The warning comes amid a major escalation following joint U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iranian territory. 

The comment was carried by state media early on Sunday, as Tehran continues retaliatory actions after the campaign that targeted multiple Iranian sites. At this stage independent verification of what specific attacks are imminent has not been reported.

This includes his daughter, daughter-in-law, son-in-law and grandchild, according to accounts from Iranian outlets. Reuters notes there is no official confirmation yet on the fate of Khamenei himself. 

This report comes amid conflicting claims about whether Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has been killed — U.S. and Israeli officials say he is dead, while Tehran has not confirmed this.
