Kids First Australia: 130 years of safeguarding children’s welfare through family support and early intervention initiatives.

A charity established in 1896, initially known as the Victorian Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, focused on safeguarding children from abuse and neglect. Now called Kids First, it continues this mission.

Nicole Artico, a vital voice in child protection, emphasised that no child should face abuse or neglect. Alarmingly, a 2023 national survey revealed that 62% of Australians have experienced some form of childhood maltreatment, underscoring the widespread nature of this issue.

Kids First has evolved over 130 years, aiming to keep families together rather than placing children in institutions. Its approach prioritises improving familial conditions and parental capabilities to ensure children’s safety within their homes.

Major contributors to abuse include socio-economic disadvantage, family violence, and substance abuse. Artico urged that child safety should be a national priority, alongside women’s safety.
