Is a COVID cluster brewing at Mount Everest?

Published

When Nepal decided to re-open its side of Mount Everest earlier this year, climbers rejoiced.

But recent reports suggest even the world’s highest peak isn’t safe from the spread of COVID-19.

Despite the Nepalese Government saying there are no infections on Everest, some climbers have tested positive.

A nearby peak – west of Everest – has also reported seven positive infections, with 19 people recently asked to evacuate.

Current rules prevent mountaineers from sharing photos of other climbers without consent, which has restricted information coming from the mountain.
