The March 3 Iranian drone strike on the U.S. Embassy in Riyadh caused significant damage, exceeding official reports from U.S. and Saudi authorities.
According to a report by the Wall Street Journal, multiple floors were heavily damaged, with certain areas deemed “unrecoverable.” A fire ignited by the strike burned for twelve hours, contradicting initial assessments of minor damage.Banner

Drone strike damage

Two Iranian drones successfully bypassed the Patriot air defence systems protecting Riyadh’s Diplomatic Quarter. The first drone struck the embassy while a second followed to maximise destruction. Areas affected included the CIA’s local station on the embassy’s top floor and details were not initially disclosed.

Analysts suggested a potential mass-casualty incident if the attack had occurred during business hours. The embassy was mostly vacant at the time, and no injuries were reported. An internal alert described extensive damage, including roof collapse and structural instability requiring sealing off certain sections.

The embassy incident is part of Iran’s ongoing campaign against U.S. military targets in the Gulf, retaliating for attacks on Iran initiated on February 28. Iranian strikes have also targeted Prince Sultan Air Base, damaging military assets and injuring U.S. personnel.

Escalating tensions

Former intelligence officials noted a “complete blackout” on the extent of damage to U.S. facilities, raising security concerns. The breach of the fortified Diplomatic Quarter has shaken confidence in regional air defence capabilities amidst increased Iranian drone activity.

The Iranian attacks have resulted in substantial military spending, including a recent $966.7 million contract awarded to Raytheon for radar system enhancements.

The conflict has escalated since March with numerous strikes against U.S. infrastructure across the Middle East.
