India’s capital of New Delhi and financial hub Mumbai have begun a gradual easing of restrictions as coronavirus infections in the country fell to a two-month low.
India on Monday reported 100,636 new infections – after several days of 400,000-plus cases in May – and 2,427 deaths.
The recent outbreak of COVID-19 in the nation has seen hospitals filled to capacity with severe shortages of oxygen and other critical medicines.
The huge spike saw India report record-breaking numbers of cases and deaths to become the second worst-hit nation after the United States, with just under 29 million infections.
Emirates continues flight suspension to and from India
The news of the reopening comes as Emirates extends its suspension of passenger flights until the end of June.
In a statement, the airline said they remain concerned with the growing number of covid infections in the nation.
Middle Eastern rival Etihad Airways is set to lift its ban a few weeks earlier, marking June 14th as a resume date.
