‘1 in 30 infections detected’: Fears India’s true COVID-19 cases could be half a billion

India is now well and truly home to the world’s deadliest coronavirus outbreak.

Since the pandemic began last year, the nation has recorded almost 18 million infections, with concerns the true number could be much higher – up to half a billion people.

Health professionals believe the rapidly growing wave is underreported due to poor infrastructure, human error, and low testing levels.

The centre for disease in New Delhi estimates “that only one in 30 infections were being caught by testing last year, so the reported cases are a serious underestimate.”

India’s daily death toll currently stands close to 3,000, but it is feared this number will continue to skyrocket until mid-may and could peak at more than 13,000.
