Independent media agencies in Australia thrive, boosting market share and pitch wins under initiatives by Sam Buchanan and IMAA

In Short:
– Independent media agencies in Australia are rapidly growing, expanding influence across various advertising platforms.
– The Independent Media Agencies of Australia has increased from five to about 180 member agencies in six and a half years.

Independent media agencies in Australia are increasing their influence and market share, particularly in sectors such as podcasts, streaming, TV, and digital out-of-home advertising.Founded around six and a half years ago, the Independent Media Agencies of Australia (IMAA) has expanded from five initial members to approximately 180, becoming the largest industry body of its kind in the country.

While precise figures for media spending are challenging to ascertain, the IMAA estimates that its member agencies contribute over 50% of digital media expenditure and around 40% of traditional media spending in Australia.

Independent agencies have also seen a rise in success with business pitches, securing 64.7% of the 440 pitches last year, a notable increase from 44% the previous year.

The West Australian government has recently opened pitching opportunities to independent agencies as well.

To support its members, the IMAA provides benefits that include trade credit insurance, reducing costs by up to 75-80%, along with a variety of other business discounts.

Weekly training programs are available through the IMAA academy, alongside community initiatives such as the “Female Leaders of Tomorrow” mentorship, “Cleanup Australia” sustainability efforts, and the First Nations “King’s Narrative” program.
