Brazilian authorities have found the backpack of a British journalist who vanished in the Amazon last week

Fears have been mounting over the fate of Dom Phillips and Bruno Pereira who went missing in Brazil last week.

Philips’ mother-in-law says she has lost hope of the pair emerging alive.

Authorities search the surrounding areas for the missing men.

Brazilian Federal Police and the army are searching the area around São Gabriel but vegetation and terrain is proving difficult.

The men’s belongings were discovered hours after a vigil, which was held on a beach in Rio de Janeiro.

“Objects belonging to the two missing persons have been found: a health card, black pants, a black sandal and a pair of boots belonging to Bruno Pereira, and a pair of boots and a backpack belonging to Dom Phillips containing personal clothing.”

Authorities have reportedly found traces of blood in the boat of a fisherman, Amarildo Costa de Oliveira, who is under arrest as the only suspect.

Witnesses say the Costa de Oliveira pursued the men upriver.

Phillips has contributed to The Guardian, and had travelled to the Javari Valley while working on an environmental protection book. Pereira was serving as a local guide on the journey.
