Hong Kong’s ‘Captain America’ sent to prison

Published

on

Hong Kong’s very own Captain America has been jailed for almost six years under the city-state’s controversial national security laws

A Hong Kong activist, Ma Chun-man was known widely for holding up Captain America’s shield during pro-democracy protests.

The individual was convicted of inciting secession by chanting slogans that promoted Hong Kong’s independence from China.

Ma is just the second person to be jailed under the law, which were passed back in 20-20 after protests engulfed the region.

The national security laws reduce Hong Kong’s independence and make it easier for authorities to punish pro-democracy activists.

While Beijing is adamant the new legislation is required to bring peace and stability to Hong Kong, critics believe it is designed to silence free speech.
