Dr Karen Sutherland from Uni SC tackles AI cyber threats and Google’s response
Google has revealed that artificial intelligence is now being actively used in cyberattacks, marking a significant escalation in the global cybersecurity threat landscape.
The company says AI tools are no longer just assisting defenders, but are increasingly being used by attackers to identify and exploit vulnerabilities, including a recent zero-day incident that exposed weaknesses in widely used software systems.
According to Google, the attack involved a previously unknown vulnerability that was rapidly identified and exploited with the help of AI-driven tools.
The company says it was able to detect unusual activity linked to the exploit and intervene before the breach could escalate further.
Dr Sutherland says the development marks a turning point in digital defence, warning that AI is increasingly becoming an active component in cyberattacks rather than just a supporting tool.
She highlights the growing risk of autonomous malware and the challenges this poses for global cybersecurity teams.
