The 63-year-old was grabbed by the neck before his security guards intervened… with Zemmour ordered to have nine days of rest by his doctors as a result.

The former journalist is widely known for his controversial views and officially announced his intention to run for president on Tuesday after weeks of speculation.

“If I win this election, it won’t be another rotation of power but a reconquest of the greatest country in the world,” Mr Zemmour said in a nearly hour-and-a-half-long speech at Sunday’s rally.

The incident involving Zemmour at his campaign rally was one of several violent clashes during the event.

Held at the Paris convention centre, French prosecutors have proceeded to open an investigation into all “incidents of violence” at the event.

10-thousand people reportedly attended the rally, with many demonstrators protesting against the far-right politician and police arresting dozens.
