Female referees to control men’s 2022 World Cup for the first time

In a historic move, female referees with officiate the 2022 men’s World Cup in Qatar

In a major move for equality, female referees will officiate this year’s Men’s World Cup in Qatar, for the first time in history. 

France’s Stephanie Frappart, Rwanda’s Salima Mukansanga, and Japan’s Yoshimi Yamashita have been selected to lead the way. 

The three women will take control of the matches kicking off on November 21, and will be supported by three female referee assistants.

“As always, the criteria we have used is ‘quality first’ and the selected match officials represent the highest level of refereeing worldwide,”

“we clearly emphasise it is quality that counts for us and not gender.

In the future, FIFA Referees Committee hopes this move “will be perceived as something normal and no longer as sensational.”

This comes as global sporting communities around the world move to strengthen gender equality.
