The federal judge overseeing the civil rights cases of the four police officers involved in the death of George Floyd has accepted Derek Chauvin’s plea deal

Chauvin pleaded guilty to violating Floyd’s civil rights back in December, admitting he kept his knee on the man’s neck, resulting in Floyd’s eventual death.

The ex-cop says he deprived Floyd of his right to be free from unreasonable seizure and unreasonable force by a police officer.

Chauvin is now likely to be sentenced between 20 and 25 years in prison, with prosecutors seeking 25.

The convicted murderer will serve the federal sentence concurrently with his state murder sentence.

The plea deal will mean Chauvin is likely to spend more time behind bars in prison at a federal level, with Minnesota felons typically serving one-third of their total sentence on parole.

Chauvin waived his right to appeal his federal conviction as part of the plea deal.
