Euro blackmail – Poland & EU spat deepens during debate

The spat between Poland and the European Union Commission is seemingly deepening as the polish prime minister accuses the EU of blackmail

This clash follows a top court in Poland rejecting key parts of EU law, with the European Commission’s president warning that she will act to protect EU values.

Poland’s prime minister has rejected the President’s public discontent, saying her “language and threats” have overstepped the mark.

Although Poles overwhelmingly support being part of the EU, Poland’s right-wing, conservative government has been clashing with the Commission over recent times on issues including LGBTQ rights and judicial independence.

Meanwhile, this latest spat is in response to a court in Poland holding that rejects the claim that EU law has precedence over Poland’s national legislation.

The European Commission’s President says this type of behaviour will not be tolerated.

This particular case is the first time that an EU member nation has questioned core EU treaties in a national court.

But Poland’s PM says other leaders need to refrain from political play.
