Former England football captain David Beckham has handed over the reins of his Instagram page to a doctor in Ukraine

The football superstar wants to highlight the “amazing work” of medical professionals caring for patients, amid the war in Ukraine.

Beckham has given, Irnya, the head of the perinatal center in Kharkiv access to his Instagram so that she can post stories about what is happening in the hospitals.

Beckham wants to show his 71 million followers the conditions the doctors and nurses are working under, and the brutality of what Russia is doing.

Iryna is only indentified by her first name and has been working 24/7 to provide support to vulnerable people.

She has recorded multiple stories to Beckham’s platform saying her team are risking their lives but they love their work.

“On the first day of the war, all pregnant women and mothers were evacuated to the basement. It was a terrible three hours that we spent together… Unfortunately, we can’t take babies who are in intensive care to the basement because they rely on life-saving equipment.”

Kharkiv is Ukraine’s second-largest city and has been the centre of bombing and missile attacks since Russia’s invasion began.

Beckham has been a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador since 2005, an agency of the United Nations responsible for providing humanitarian and developmental aid to children worldwide.

He has urged his followers to donate and support UNICEF’s work in Ukraine.
