Covid19 case found in Tokyo athletes village

The Games haven’t even started yet, but the controversy surround the Tokyo Olympics going ahead continues.

A person has tested positive for COVID-19 at the athletes’ village, adding to concerns about infections at the Games.

The Opening Ceremony gets Sunday on Friday.

Tokyo 2020 chief executive Toshiro Muto confirmed a foreign visitor who is involved in organising the Games had tested positive.

PRIVACY CONCERNS

The person, a non-athlete in their 60s, had only mild symptoms but was hospitalised because of their age and pre-existing conditions.

The person’s gender and other details were not disclosed due to privacy concerns.

Athletes are just starting to arrive for the Games which will run from July 23 to August 8.

The Tokyo Games were delayed a year due to the coronavirus pandemic, and have led to mass protests throughout Tokyo.

Organisers have promised that the Games will be “safe and secure”.

The Games are being held mostly without spectators and under tight quarantine rules, with officials urging the public to stay home and watch on television.

Host city Tokyo had 1,308 new cases on Thursday and another 1,271 on Friday.
