Covid restrictions lead to widespread protests in the Chinese city of Guangzhou

In the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou, it seems residents have had enough of Covid restrictions.

Footage shows thousands of people crashing through barriers and marching down streets in chaotic scenes.

The videos appear to demonstrate the growing public resentment throughout China, amid continuing coronavirus curbs.

With virus cases surging in a number of regions, the outbreak in Guangzhou is the largest.

Authorities have reported 5,000 daily infections for the first time ever, with many fearing localised lockdowns could widen.

Footage shows noisy scenes of people charging down streets and rioting.

In one video, students staying at the local university’s dorm came out and sang together.

Twitter is blocked in China, and several hashtags related to the topic of “riots” in the area have been taken down from Weibo.

Despite having a Covid-zero policy, China as a whole reported over 17,000 new local infections on November 14, which is up from 16,000 a day earlier.
