It’s Dubbed “China’s Hawaii” for its Sandy beaches and high end hotels, now it’s a hotspot

The popular resort city of Sanya, on China’s tropical Hainan Island, has been thrown into Covid-19 lockdown.

Approximately 80,000 tourists remain stranded in the popular holiday destination, according to the Deputy mayor He Shigang.

Upwards of 800 cases have been reported so far, making it the latest hotspot.

From August 6, tourists are required to stay in the region for seven days and clear five covid tests before leaving.

80 per cent of flights leaving the area have been cancelled, all public transport has been halted, and peoples movements now being heavily restricted.

The city has been divided into medium and high risk zones, in an attempt to curb the growing number of cases.

However, the lockdown comes at the peak of summer tourism.

Authorities are working around the clock to help stranded travellers by offering them half-price discounts on hotels.

Mass testing has now begun, with reports tourists are queuing for up to 90 minutes.
