Beijing’s Defense Minister expressed firm support for China’s maritime activities in the strait. China’s Foreign Ministry acknowledged the situation, urging all involved parties to maintain calm. The blockade raises significant issues for the U.S., particularly regarding enforcement against Chinese vessels.
The ongoing standoff presents a dilemma for the White House. The decision to enforce the blockade against Chinese vessels could provoke direct conflict, while leniency might weaken the blockade’s effectiveness.
