British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly is under fire for offensive LGBTQ+ comments ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup

British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly is facing scrutiny for saying LGBTQ+ soccer fans heading to Qatar for the World Cup should be ‘respectful.’

The tournament is set to kick off in a matter of weeks, and has received widespread concerns for being hosted by a country where same-sex relationships are illegal.

Cleverly said when it comes to LGBTQ+ fans attending the World Cup a ‘bit of flex and compromise’ is needed.

Shadow Foreign Secretary David Lammy has slammed the comments as ‘tone deaf.’

New British PM Rishi Sunak’s office also responded to the controversial comments saying they wouldn’t expect anyone to compromise who they are to be safe.

He added,”Qatar’s policies are not those of the UK government and not ones that we would endorse.”
