Big changes coming to the modern pentathlon

Published

on

Obstacle racing will replace equestrian in the modern pentathlon from 2024

The Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne is the governing body behind the changes. They say it’s a “landmark decision” because of the widespread opposition from athletes.

The obstacle course was selected from 60 potential options. Organisers say it is “dynamic and attractive to global audiences”, and has a variety of training opportunities for athletes.

Two variations of obstacle racing will be tested, including with the other existing sports before a final decision is made.

“While we still have specifics to finalise, we have a new and exceptional opportunity to grow and give visibility to our sport for the benefit of many generations to come, and that’s very exciting.”

Yasser Hefny, chair of the UIPM athletes committee

If the trials are successful, it could be added to the sport after the next Olympics.

The pentathlon currently includes running, swimming, fencing and shooting.
