Beijing says military conflict is on the cards if the United States encourages Taiwan’s independence

Speaking on a US radio interview, Beijing’s ambassador says the issue of Taiwan is currently “the biggest tinder-box” between the two nations.

The ambassador warns if Taiwanese authorities keep pushing for independence, encouraged by America “it will most likely involve the two big countries in a conflict”.

The United States has responded to the interview, confirming its support for the “one China” policy and its commitments under the US Taiwan Relations Act.

This act officially recognises Beijing rather than Taipei, but also requires Washington to provide Taiwan with the ability to defend itself.

The Pentagon says it will “continue to assist Taiwan in maintaining a sufficient self-defence” while also maintaining our own capacity to resist any use of force”.
