Australia is farewelling one of the nation’s most loved media icons, Bert Newton
The television icon was farewelled at a state funeral in Melbourne, with politicians, celebrities and TV industry personalities all in attendance at the St Patrick’s Cathedral.
Newton’s wife Patti along with some immediate family members arrived at the church in a white limo at 9:15am
With Melbourne’s weather hosting grey skies and light rain, it was a day to remember an icon that touched the lives of many, through his smile and laughter.
Television and radio stars such as Eddie McGuire and Peter Hitchener were in attendance, filing into the cathedral to pay tribute to the 83 year old.
The Prime Minister of Australia, Scott Morrison as well as State Premier Daniel Andrews where also in attendance.
Melbourne newsreader Peter Hitchener was also seen making his way inside the cathedral.
Speaking outside the cathedral, TV personality Eddie McGuire said he was deeply honoured to be reading the eulogy.
“She didn’t tell me what to say, but she was pretty keen for people to see the other side of Bert,” McGuire said.

Newton had been battling complications since surgery to have his leg amputated in May.
Bert’s children, Matthew and Lauren, have written heartfelt messages which will be read at the service, according to The Herald Sun.
Matthew is an actor and director who is currently based in New York, therefore he wasn’t able to attend the funeral in person.
