Australia reaches net-zero agreement

Australia’s national coalition party has slumped to its lowest level of support in three years as Nationals MPs finally agreed to the Prime Minister’s net zero target on Sunday

According to the latest Newspoll, voters are increasingly in favour of strong climate policies and believe it should be a top priority for the government.

Nationals MPs have been engaged in deliberations throughout the past two weeks over whether or not they should support the government’s net-zero goal in the lead up to the Glasgow summit.

On Sunday, the party voted in favour of the deal in exchange for greater regional transition support and an extra cabinet position.

Meanwhile, Nationals Leader and Deputy PM Barnaby Joyce says his party has signed up to a “process” to support the net-zero target, dependant on the regional support package.

The poll shows 47 per cent of voters believed the government should prioritise meeting emissions reduction targets, with 40 per cent believing lower energy bills should be the priority.
