Are Australia’s climate initiatives enough to host COP29?

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is not in Egypt, so who’s there lobbying for down under?

Australia’s minister for the Pacific is the one in the spotlight instead.

Pat Conroy is meeting with Pacific island leaders to discuss plans to co-host a COP summit with them in a few years time.

The Albanese government wants to step up and be the face of the conference in 2024, along with a number of Pacific Island nations.

This conference happening in Egypt right now will be the key time to lobby that move.

Australia is coming to COP27 with new climate initiatives put in place by the new Albanese government like the 43 per cent emissions cut by 2030.

Even though the Prime minister isn’t there right now, he’ll be attending the G20

But there are plenty of Aussies at COP27 to boost Australia’s presence at the important UN summit, including some who believe this may not be quite enough for us to shake off our old slow progress on climate change which could impact hosting rights to a future COP.
