Superstars including George Clooney, Gladys Knight and U2 were among those celebrated at the Kennedy Centre Honours show

Actor George Clooney, singer Gladys Knight and iconic band U2 were among those celebrated at the annual Kennedy Centre Honours show.

It marks the 45th year of the event, celebrating contribution to the American music, stage and screen industry.

In front of a star studded audience, President Joe Biden thanked the artists for their devotion to American culture.

“To see each other, to see ourselves in one another, to unite in common cause. Tonight we celebrate a truly exceptional … group of artists.”

The room was packed with celebrities, including Julia Roberts and Matt Damon.

Biden also made special mention of U2, thanking them for their contribution to the American music sector.

“From this Irish-American President in a White House designed by Irish hands I want to thank U2 for all you have done, you really make a difference.”
