There are renewed concerns that India’s air pollution is significantly reducing life expectancy in the region

A new report has raised concerns about India’s poor air quality having dangerous consequences, even shortening the lives of those in the region.

The US led the study, which found that the 480 million people living in Northern India experience “the most extreme levels of air pollution in the world”.

The report goes on to say that the region’s air quality is so bad that it is reducing the population’s average life expectancy by nine years.

Can cleaning up air pollution help?

On the flip side of the report, it also found that clean air and strong clean air policies can increase an individual’s life by up to five years on average.

The Energy Policy Institute says the study found that India’s pollution levels “are 10 times worse than those found anywhere else in the world”.

The institute believes that reaching certain key policy targets is the key to reducing poor quality air.

The report also noted this “would increase the national life expectancy level by nearly two years, and three-and-a-half years for residents of Delhi”.
