‘Torture and killings’ – Ukrainians reflect on six months of war

The Ukrainian military have successfully taken down a key Russian drone as they recapture territory

The Ukrainian military pressure in key towns has forced Russian troops to retreat.

However, Russia claims this is a planned regrouping to attack elsewhere.

While Ukraine has liberated many of its key areas, it has come at an unforgettable cost to the people.

Speaking exclusively to the BBC, a local named Artem, recounts the torture and killings, where many of them were electrocuted.

“They turned it [ventilation] off so everyone could hear how people scream when they are shocked with electricity. They did this to some of the prisoners every other day… They even did this to the women”.

They made me hold two wires.

There was an electric generator. The faster it went, the higher the voltage. They said, ‘if you let it go, you are finished’. Then they started asking questions. They said I was lying, and they started spinning it even more and the voltage increased.”

Although, Ukraine has regained control in this region now, many of the locals fear of a Russian return.
