Why 9/11 terrorists are heading back to court

Published

on

The pre-trial hearings in the case of those accused of plotting and coordinating the 9-11 terrorist attacks will resume on Tuesday

The five individuals accused of the crimes are currently being held at Guantanamo Bay, and if found guilty they could all receive the death penalty sentence.

The charges were laid down by the US government back in 2012 and include.

“Terrorism, hijacking aircraft, conspiracy, murder in violation of the law of war… and intentionally causing serious bodily injury”

The last in-person trial for this case was held back in February 20-20, with this latest round of hearings due to finally resume following Covid-19 related disruptions.

The hearings also fall in the week leading up to the 20th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks, with several of the victims’ families in Guantanamo Bay to witness the proceedings.

It comes as the Biden administration moves forward with its plans to close the notorious prison altogether.
